How do you breath when you run?


It can be difficult to catch your breath when you run.

May 2023 - Breath! Before I continue I’m not a professional breathing coach.. I keep company with my dear friend Kev @breatheolution so I’d like to say I know a little bit, but if you’re looking for the full Monty then this is your man!


So I’ve been asked a lot recently about breathing while running:


How do you do it effectively?

I panic when I can’t control it, what do I do?

My chest goes tight when I’m going fast! Help?


Some of these sound like you… Well whilst I can offer up advise as a running coach on how to help you with that, there are certainly more qualified people than me for the job but here’s my 2 breaths worth..


- first thing.. particularly those on my plans who are striving to be quicker, as you get fitter this will become easier. If you haven’t been used to being out of breath then it will be an alien experience for you.


- get comfortable being uncomfortable.. I spend most of my training week out of breath but controlled. So whilst I’ll be struggling for breath as my body demands more my breathing becomes rhythmic, it forms a pattern and each breath in and out is the same


slow down and tape your mouth shut… or just try nasal breathing but be sure to go slower.. it takes a lot of getting used to Just a few snippets of advice for you, try them out and let me know what you think
